Practical Dental Myth and Realities
Introduction
Many decades ago unqualified people (quacks) provided certain dental
treatment that was not based on scientific principles and along with this
kind of assumption based treatment; myths developed which became imprinted
in people's minds. Dentistry today is an advanced specialized branch of
medical science based on scientific facts. Research in dental science has
led to better understanding of oral diseases and a systematic approach to
treatment based on facts was established. This advancement in dental science
has only reduced the myths and not completely eliminated it from the minds
of the people. In this booklet, few of the myths, which still exists, are
presented along with their related facts for people to understand.
Extraction (tooth removal) of teeth leads to oral
cancer
Oral cancers have many complex origins. There is no evidence to
suggest that oral cancers are caused by tooth extractions. Risk factor of
oral cancer are smoking, alcohol consumption, ill fitting and painful
denture, smokeless tobacoo.
Every time a new tooth will develop when a tooth is
extracted
Human beings have 2 sets of teeth. (The baby teeth and the
permanent teeth). When the baby teeth are lost, they are replaced by the
permanent ones). And when the permanent ones are lost there is no
replacement so the person will have to opt for artificial replacements.
Scaling increases sensitivity of the teeth?
Tooth sensitivity occurs when the first layer of teeth, which is
enamel and root surface (cementum) of tooth wears away due to various
reasons leading to exposure of dentin, which is the second layer of the
teeth. Scaling (cleaning) is the procedure used to remove deposits like
plaque, calculus, and stains from the tooth surfaces and not enamel. Such
deposits, if not removed by scaling, cause infection and loosening of the
gums, ultimately leading to pyorrhea and tooth loss. Scaling is a safe and
routine procedure and does not damage the tooth surface in any way.
Scaling (Cleaning) of teeth leads to enamel damage,
forms gap between teeth, teeth loosens and weakens the gums.
Sometimes cleaning of teeth is absolutely necessary for the
maintenance of oral health. The space between teeth is actually filled with
tartar (calculus), so after removing calculus or tartar you see gaps. So,
you should know that calculus is not a part of teeth. However, dentist
should do it preferably every six-month. Don’t wait for condition to worsen
resulting in tooth mobility or bleeding gums.
